There are four types of cards: ships, upgrades, attacks, and anytime cards.
Ship cards are Jacks, Queens, and Kings. Jacks are destroyers, and can have a maximum of two upgrades. Queens are cruisers, and can have a maximum of three upgrades. Kings are dreadnaughts, can have a maximum of four upgrades. (These maximums do not include the 3 (fighter squadron) upgrade.)
Upgrade cards are placed under ship cards that have been put into play. They give that ship better defense and attack capabilities. These cards are the 2 (shield), 6 (particle beam blaster), 7 (electromagnetic railgun), 8 (laser cannon), and 9 (antimatter torpedo launcher). The 3 (fighter squadron) also acts as an upgrade card once it is in play, but is deployed as an anytime card.
Attack cards are the 5 (megamissile) and 10 (megamissile barrage) cards. A player can play one (and only one) attack card per turn.
Anytime cards are the 3 (fighter squadron), 4 (cloaked mine), Ace (time travel commandos) and Joker (damage control team). A player can play as many as he or she wishes at any time, even during the other player's turn or between turns.
Note that whether a card is a spade, heart, club, or diamond is not important.
